Dawlish, Devon
The little regency resort town, nestling between steep surrounding hills has several popular beaches. These include the famous Dawlish Warren which is both a holiday destination and also a wildlife haven.
The town itself, particularly around the seafront, is like many of the resort towns in South Devon, a classic of Regency and early Victorian style. The Strand (1803-1809), although mostly converted to shops, remains impressive. It was here that Jane Austen stayed, as did Charles Dickens (who decided to make Dawlish the birthplace of Nicholas Nickleby).
In the middle of the town is a flat landscaped area called ‘The Lawn’, home to various exotic wildfowl and the famous Dawlish black swans. They were brought here from Australia by a local resident at the beginning of the twentieth century.
The stretch of railway along the coast here is one of the most famous in Britain, being very exposed at times of rough weather.
Dawlish has a good selection of shops of all types and its own Leisure Centre. There are plenty of places to eat and drink and there is the Shaftesbury Theatre which has shows throughout the year.
